Many of the most commonly used words in text are called sight words or high frequency words (HFW). We call them sight words because readers will need to know them on "sight" or automatically. Knowing these words will help your beginning reader build confidence, increase fluency, and allow them to focus on the content of what they are reading, rather than sounding out each word as they go. The great news is that with small amounts of consistent practice daily, both at school and at home, your reader will learn them and that success leads to more motivation to read!
Every month we will send home a list of 10 words for you and your student to work on. The students will be quizzed at the end of each month, and their progress will be sent home for you to review. We will spend plenty of time working on them in class, but practice at home is also essential in helping your child learn these words quickly.
